What is a hair serum for the scalp?

A hair serum from our hair loss and hair growth range is a liquid or gel care product applied directly to the scalp. It is not rinsed out: it stays on the skin at the root. It comes in a pipette bottle, as a spray or as dosed ampoules, one for each application. Each ampoule is used in one go, which avoids over- or under-dosing.

These products make no promise about hair growth or hair loss, and results vary from person to person. They do not claim to bring hair back to an area that has become smooth. Established baldness or sudden hair loss calls for the advice of a dermatologist.

We offer well-known brands. The Vichy Dercos Aminexil Clinical ampoules contain Aminexil, a molecule developed by the L’Oréal group. The Kérastase Genesis serum is aimed at fragile hair. Elvive, Luxéol, Weleda and Activilong complete the selection.

A serum is meant for the skin where you apply it: it is of no use on the lengths. Its texture is designed to dry quickly and not stick to the roots. Most formulas are unisex and suit men and women alike. It does not replace shampoo: it comes after, on clean skin.

How do you choose a hair serum?

If you are looking for a course of care with a precise dose at each application, ampoules are the format to choose. For fine hair that lacks volume, a serum focused on density better matches what you are looking for.

If you are looking for a formula of natural origin, look at rosemary. Activilong’s Actigro range makes it its star ingredient, and Weleda offers a plant-based tonic lotion. Rosemary has long been used in hair care, diluted in an oil or a lotion. These lotions suit a daily scalp massage.

Also look at the texture. A spray or a liquid lotion does not grease the roots, which is practical if you wash your hair often. A gel or a richer texture suits a dry scalp better. A bottle with an applicator tip places the product more precisely along the parting. A graduated pipette also lets you count the drops.

Read the packaging before buying: a course states the number of ampoules or weeks, and the frequency of application. Choose a rhythm that you can keep up every day without forgetting. If your scalp is sensitive, prefer a fragrance-free formula and test it first on a small area.

How do you apply a hair serum?

Apply the serum to a clean scalp, dry or slightly damp depending on the instructions. Separate your hair parting by parting, about every two centimetres, and place the product directly on the skin. In the evening or after the shower, you have time to let it dry in peace.

Then massage with your fingertips for one to two minutes, in small circles, to spread the product well. Do not rinse, and wait for it to dry before styling or applying a styling product. Wash your hands straight afterwards, so as not to carry the product to your eyes.
