Beard Care

Beard Care: Proraso, Sapiens and King C. Gillette beard oils, dedicated shampoos and shaving creams. Nourish the hair and keep a soft, neat beard.

What is beard care for?

Beard care products look after both the hair and the skin underneath. A beard hair is thicker and coarser than a head hair. The skin of the face, for its part, dries quickly under a full beard, which brings itching and small flakes.

Beard hairs also grow in several directions at once. Without care, the beard becomes coarse, prickly to the touch and unruly. A daily care routine takes less than two minutes in the morning and clearly changes the look of the beard. A beard needs looking after from the first millimetres. Short hairs growing back prickle and itch during the first weeks, and that is when many men give up. A light oil softens this period and makes the beard more pleasant to touch.

Beard oil is the basic product: a few drops soften the hair and nourish the skin. It is made of plant oils such as jojoba, argan or sweet almond, often fragranced. The balm, which is thicker, adds a light hold to keep unruly hairs in order.

Beard shampoo washes without drying, as it is gentler than a shampoo for head hair. Shaving cream is for those who shave their cheeks or neck: it helps the blade glide and makes shaving more comfortable. We stock three well-known brands. Proraso, an Italian brand born in Florence in 1948, is famous for its eucalyptus and menthol shaving cream. King C. Gillette is Gillette’s beard range, and Sapiens completes the selection.

How do you choose a beard oil?

Read the ingredients list: a good oil starts with plant oils. Jojoba oil resembles the skin’s sebum and goes on without leaving a greasy film. Argan oil suits dry, brittle hair.

Then choose according to your beard. A short beard is happy with a light oil, which disappears in a few seconds. A long or curly beard benefits from a balm, which tames it as well as nourishing it. The fragrance matters too, as you smell it all day. Proraso, for example, offers an oil with woody, spicy notes, and another, fresher one with eucalyptus. Sensitive skin prefers a lightly fragranced oil.

Finally, look at the bottle. A dropper lets you dose accurately, without waste or making the beard greasy. Tinted glass, brown or amber, protects oils from the light, which makes them go rancid faster. A small bottle slips easily into a travel bag.

Trim the beard before applying the care product, with one of our clippers and razors: the oil spreads better on a neat beard.

How do you use beard care products every day?

Wash the beard 2 to 3 times a week with a dedicated shampoo, not every day, to keep the sebum that coats it. Rinse with lukewarm water and dry by patting with a towel, without rubbing.

On a clean, slightly damp beard, place 3 to 5 drops of oil in your palm. Rub your hands together, massage the skin under the beard, then spread towards the tips. Finish with a boar-bristle brush or a comb. If you shave your cheeks, build up the shaving cream with a shaving brush in small damp circles. Shave in the direction of hair growth to limit irritation and ingrown hairs.

In the evening, a long beard likes a little balm on the tips, which dry faster than the rest. Once a month, even up the outline with the clipper to remove the damaged tips and keep a neat shape. A sulphate-free shampoo is kinder to the skin under the beard.

To style your hair, our waxes and pomades take over, and everything else awaits you in our men and beard range.
