Felt hats for autumn and winter: fedora, wool wide-brimmed hat, retro cloche or wide brim. Wool felt blocks the wind, keeps its shape and suits your coat.
The fedora is the best-known shape. Its crown is dented in the middle and pinched at the front. Its medium brim turns up at the back and dips slightly at the front. This felt hat suits women and men alike, with a coat or with jeans. It is worn tilted slightly forward, for a slightly mysterious air.
The felt hat with a wide brim and the wool wide-brimmed hat give an elegant silhouette. Their brim frames the face and draws the eye. They go very well with a long coat or an autumn dress. The wider the brim, the smarter the style.
The retro-style cloche hat has a short brim that frames the face. It is worn low on the forehead, as in the 1920s. It goes well with a bob, a short cut or hair tied low at the nape. Our retro cloche hat is worn at the office as well as on a stroll.
Some models have a decorative detail. Our women’s hat with a gold-coloured chain adds a shiny touch to a plain outfit. A ribbon or a chain around the crown is enough to change the look of a very simple hat.
To choose, look at your hairstyle too. A fedora with a medium brim suits long, loose hair. With a bun, take a fairly tall crown so that it slides underneath without pulling. A wide brim balances a long face.
A felt hat is not woven. It is made of tightly packed wool fibres pressed together with hot water and steam. This gives a dense yet supple material, with no threads that fray.
This thick material blocks the wind and keeps you warm when the cold arrives. It also withstands a light rain: the drops stay on the surface and come off with a simple flick of the hand. That is why felt is the classic hat of autumn and winter. Felt does not crease in a wardrobe, unlike a fabric hat.
Felt is shaped with steam: this is how it is given its form. Once dry, it keeps its creases and brim for a long time. A well-stored felt hat can therefore be worn for several winters in a row.
To the touch, good felt is smooth and even, with no thinner areas. The brim stays firm when you lift the hat by the side. Wool felt is also nicer to wear than a synthetic fabric, because wool lets a little air through.
Felt comes in many colours. Black, camel and dark grey go with all coats. Burgundy or dark green give a more original touch to a winter outfit.
Brush your felt hat with a soft brush, always in the same direction. Go round the crown anticlockwise. This removes dust without ruffling the fibres. A horsehair brush suits felt very well.
Pick up your hat by the brim, at the front and the back, rather than by the pinch on top. If it is always held in the same place, the felt wears and keeps the mark of the fingers.
If it is wet, shake it gently and leave it to air-dry, away from the radiator. Strong heat would make the felt shrink. Also turn the inner band outwards so that it dries at the same time. To help it keep its shape, slip scrunched-up newspaper into the crown while it dries.
To store it, place it upside down on its crown, or in a hat box. This way, its brim does not flatten. Do not leave it for several hours in full sun behind a window, because its colours may fade. A fabric cover keeps it safe from dust.
A small stain can be removed with a white eraser, rubbed very gently on completely dry felt.
For a more relaxed look, the beret in wool felt keeps the same warmth in a softer shape. In fine weather, switch to the straw hat, which brings back the wide-brimmed hat and the cloche in a light version. All our models are gathered in the hats and caps section.
