Straw hats for summer: wide-brimmed sun hat, boater, crocheted raffia cloche or flower-trimmed model. They shade your face and suit every holiday outfit.
The wide-brimmed sun hat has a soft, wide brim that shades the face, neck and shoulders. It is the straw hat for days at the beach or by the pool. It is the hat that covers the most when the sun is strong. It is worn with a long dress, a sarong or a linen shirt.
The boater has a flat, rigid brim and a flat top too. It gives an elegant look, ideal for a summer wedding or a day out in town. It is often decorated with a ribbon around the crown. It suits women and men alike. It is worn straight, sitting firmly on top of the head, with a low bun or loose hair.
The cloche hat has a short brim that comes down towards the face. It was very fashionable in the 1920s. Our crocheted raffia model and our openwork cloche with a rolled brim bring back this retro charm. They go well with a bob or hair tied low.
For a more boho look, choose an openwork model or one with flower squares. These hats go well with a long dress, a white shirt or denim shorts.
Do you like details? We have hats decorated with flowers, with flower squares or with a crocheted flower. Our hat with a removable belt changes style in one move: you wear it with or without its belt, depending on your outfit. The flowers, in fabric or crochet, sit on the brim or around the crown. They dress up a plain dress in an instant.
A woven straw hat is fairly rigid. It keeps its shape well, and its brim stays crisp even in the wind. It is the material of the boater and of most wide-brimmed sun hats. It needs a little care in a suitcase, because a rigid brim bends if squashed. The tighter the weave, the sturdier the hat and the more shade it gives.
Raffia is a fibre taken from the leaves of a palm tree. It is softer and gentler to the touch. Natural raffia has a light beige colour, slightly golden. Worked in Crochet, it makes a hat that can be rolled and slipped into a bag without losing its shape. It regains its shape as soon as you put it on your head.
Openwork models have small holes in the weave. They let the air through and stay light in strong heat. Our sun hat with a crocheted flower follows the same idea, with an even more open knit. These are the most pleasant hats for a long day outdoors in the middle of August.
To choose, think about how you will use it. A hat that travels a lot will be more at ease in crocheted raffia. A hat for a smart occasion will look better in rigid straw. For the beach, a wide brim matters more than the material.
A straw hat does not like water. To remove dust, use a soft brush or a barely damp cloth. Never immerse it in water: the straw swells and loses its shape. A small stain can be removed by dabbing with a damp cloth, without rubbing.
If it has got damp, leave it to air-dry, away from direct sun and the radiator. A slightly bent brim can be reshaped with steam: hold it near a kettle, then reshape it with your hands. Do not leave it in a car in full sun: the heat dries the straw, which becomes fragile.
To store it, place it upside down, on its crown, or hang it on a hook. Do not put anything on top of it. When travelling, fill the crown with rolled-up clothes: it keeps its shape at the bottom of the suitcase. For transport, a hat box remains the safest solution.
Leave a little room under the crown for your hair too. A low bun or a braid slips underneath without deforming the hat. A high bun, on the other hand, presses on the crown and ends up marking it.
When autumn arrives, the felt hat takes over with the same shapes, including the wide-brimmed hat and the cloche. If you are looking for a hat that folds without any trouble, take a look at our bucket hat. All our models are gathered in the hats and caps section.
